Black Law Students Association
Welcome to the Glenn T. Johnson Chapter of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois. Our purpose is to articulate and promote the needs and goals of black law students and effectuate change in the legal community. We welcome and encourage students of all races and ethnic backgrounds to become active members of the Glenn T. Johnson Chapter of the BLSA. It is our belief that diversity within the legal community and among our membership is necessary to realize our goals.
Our namesake, Glenn T. Johnson, was born on July 17, 1917 in Washington, Arkansas. He earned his B.S in education from Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio, and his J.D. and S.J.D from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. During World War II, Johnson served in the U.S. Army. He later served as a member of the Illinois National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Johnson worked as assistant attorney general of Illinois for seven years and as a senior attorney for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago for three years. In 1966, he was elected associate judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County and in 1968 was elected full Circuit Court judge, a position he held until 1973. That year, Johnson was sworn in as justice of the Appellate Court of Illinois. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1994.
The Glenn T. Johnson Chapter of BLSA is the most active student organization at the John Marshall Law School. We have received awards consistently for our community service outside of school and in the community, our programs on campus, our student outreach, and more. It is our goal to keep the spirit of BLSA alive each day always remembering our purpose and our mission.
